In2Books - "Readers are Leaders"

This morning, our second graders visited their pen pals at ESM HS. Students from Mrs. McCoy's 10th grade English class served as role models for our second grade students in the In2Books program. The students read the same picture books and wrote letters to each other throughout the year. We had wonderful celebration of reading in the high school library. The South Street students were awarded a certificate, a new writing journal, a novel, a pencil and a bookmark for their participation. Congratulations to all!

April is Autism Awareness Month

This week, South Street School students participated in a walk to raise awareness for autism and other developmental disorders. This took place during PE classes. Mrs. Chanenchuk, our PE teacher, read the book, All About My Brother, by Sarah Peralta. This is a book written by an eight-year old girl who introduces the reader to her brother who has autism. The idea for the autism awareness walk came from Mrs. Gonzalez/Mrs. Flynn's class.

Happy Earth Day

South Street School's students participated in The Earth Day Groceries Project this year. It is a cost-free environmental awareness project in which students decorate paper grocery bags with environmental messages for Earth Day. Managers of the Manorville King Kullen, Mr. Vinny Suchta and Mr. Rich Gregory, were kind enough to support the project. Over 300 bags were decorated by students and will be used for customers' groceries on Earth Day, April 22.
