Students in Mrs. Athanasopoulos/Mrs. Curtin's class were excited this morning to find that two baby ducklings hatched in their classroom during the night! These second graders have been studying the life cycle of chickens and ducks. Kindergarten classes were invited to visit the ducklings, as they will begin a duck unit in the library/media center in the upcoming weeks. Welcome spring!

Flat Stanley
Second grade students went on a field trip to the John Engeman Theater in Northport to see a production of Flat Stanley. The entire school read the book and the second graders were fortunate to be able to see the book come to life! Every stduent was provided with a copy of Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown as part of our F.I.R.S.T. (Families Invited to Read and Share Together) program. Here are some photos of Mrs. Austin's class in the theater, along with their own Flat Stanleys!
iPads for Everyone!
Kindergarten students in Mr. Burns/Mrs. Hayton's class were very excited today as they were introduced to their new iPads. Our library/media center now has 30 iPads and every classroom has five iPads for the children. Where is the home button? How do I swipe? What is an app? How can I search for an app? Just ask a child at South Street and they can tell you!

Helping the Planet
Sesond grade classes celebrated Earth Day by creating recycled "treasures." All these useful and imaginative projects were created from materials found at home. The children presented their projects to their peers and explained why they think it is important to care for our planet.
Students in Mrs. Haas/Mrs. Maffia's class walked aound our school building to clean up our property. Save the Earth!
April's PBIS Activity
Two role model students from each class were selected to participate in our April PBIS activity. Some of the children decorated wooden bird houses and others rolled cones in honey and bird seed. We hope our feathered friends around South Street enjoy the new houses and bird feeders.
Police Smart
Suffolk County Police Officer Nancy Ward visited all our classes this week and taught our K-2 students about how to be safe. She spoke about the importance of wearing life jackets on boats, seatbelts in cars and helmets while on bicycles. Officer Ward also discussed stranger danger. We love when she visits our school!

Teddy Bear Clinic
Today, we hosted the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center Teddy Bear Clinic for all kindergarten classes. The Teddy Bear Clinic is designed to help students understand what occurs during an Emergency Department visit. A hospital setting was created in our library by arranging a mock admitting station, laboratory station, radiology station and wound care station. The children brought their stuffed animals to school and described their various aliments. Many thanks to the nurses at Brookhaven Hospital for teaching our children about what to expect during a hospital visit.

Kindergarten's Safari Adventure in the African Savanna
The Kindergarten students researched the African Savanna and then recreated this biome at South Street School using recycled materials. Here are some fun facts that they learned: Giraffes have blue tongues. Baby zebras are called foals. Lions live in a pride. Old world monkeys have long noses. There are 54 types of orchids in Southern Africa. A giraffe has four stomachs. Crocodiles have a good sense of smell. Bush babies are about the size of a squirrel.
Kindergarten familes and grades 1 and 2 were invited to tour the Savanna today. Everyone learned a lot! Thank you to the kindergarten team for all their hard work and creativity!
