Author Visit

We had a visit from author Valerie Pfundstein, who wrote the book, Veterans: Heroes in our Neighborhood. Mrs. Pfundstein explained how she used heroes in her own life as the characters in her story. She engaged the children with stories of the veterans she knows and then taught the children how important it is to be thankful for their service to our country. Mrs. Pfundstein concluded each assembly by teaching the children a "thank you" song in sign language.

A Visit From Josie's Dad

Mrs. Liberti's second grade class was honored to host a visit from Josie's dad, a local veterinarian. When Dr. Shuman learned that the second graders were reading about animals, as part of their Journeys unit, he volunteered to talk to his daughter's class. He explained how to keep pets healthy, showed some skeletal models, and reviewed animal x-rays with the children. Did you know that there are special band-aids just for animals? Take a look...

Read for the Record

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is an annual campaign to raise awareness for the importance of early childhood literacy by setting a new world record for the largest shared reading. This year's book was Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells. At South Street School, we celebrated last night by reading the book and engaging in bunny-related crafts. Parents and children even had a chance to meet the bunny siblings, Max and Ruby, thanks to the Long Island Livestock Company.

In2Books

Second graders at SSS and 10th grade students in Mrs. McCoy's English class at ESM High School are literary pen pals. The students read the same picture books and write letters back and forth to discuss the stories. Yesterday, the HS students came to South Street to meet their pen pals. In the spring, we will visit the HS for a reading/writing celebration.
